Veneridae – Venerinae: Bassina (Callanaitis) disjecta (Perry, 1811) (‘wedding-cake venus’)

Synonym(s): disjecta Perry, 1811 lamellata Lamarck, 1818.

Typical shell-length 60 mm. The lamellae are easily broken off, and tend to be worn flat in beached specimens. Lives intertidally and subtidally in sand and mud in moderately sheltered environments. Native. Endemic to southeastern Australia (NSW, TAS, VIC and SA). In Tasmanian waters, this is a widespread and often common species.
