Mesodesmatidae – Davilinae: Anapella cycladea (Lamarck, 1818) (‘smooth-toothed triangle’)

Synonym(s): cycladea Lamarck, 1818 triquetra Hanley, 1843 pinguis Crosse & Fischer, 1864 amygdala Crosse & Fischer, 1864 adelaidae Angas, 1865.

Typical shell-length 25 mm. Similar to Spisula trigonella, but usually larger, with less prominent umbones and a more angular outline. Lives intertidally and subtidally in sand and mud in sheltered environments. Native. Endemic to southeastern Australia (NSW, TAS, VIC and SA). In Tasmanian waters, this is a widespread and locally abundant species.
