Volutidae – Cymbiinae: Ericusa papillosa (Swainson, 1822) (‘nippled volute’)

Synonym(s): papillosa Swainson, 1822 papillaris Swainson, 1840 kenyoniana Brazier, 1898.

Typical shell-length 130 mm. More subdued colouration, broader outline, more swollen apex and presence of slight ribbing on the spire distinguish this species from E. sowerbyi. Lives subtidally and offshore on sand and mud, emerging at night to feed. Native. Endemic to southeastern and southwestern Australia (QLD, NSW, TAS, VIC, SA and WA). In Tasmanian waters, this is a widespread species, but seldom beached.
