Fissurellidae – Fissurellinae: Amblychilepas nigrita (G. B. Sowerby I, 1835) (‘black keyhole-limpet’)

Synonym(s): nigrita Sowerby, 1834 pritchardi Hedley, 1895.

Typical shell-length 25 mm. As with all keyhole-limpets, the shell sits atop a much larger animal. Lives subtidally under rocks and stones, especially in moderately exposed environments. Native. Endemic to southeastern and southwestern Australia (QLD, NSW, TAS, VIC, SA and WA). In Tasmanian waters, this is a widespread species, but seldom beached in numbers.
