Argonautidae: Argonauta argo Linnaeus, 1758 (‘common paper-nautilus’)
Synonym(s): argo Linnaeus, 1758.
Typical shell-length 380 mm. Lives in offshore waters in midwater. Native. Occurs all around Australia (QLD, NSW, TAS, VIC, SA, WA and NT); also widespread in warmer oceanic waters worldwide. In Tasmanian waters, this species has only been recorded very rarely, on the E coast; a series of strandings around the SE in April 2014 was apparently unprecedented.
