Mactridae – Mactrinae: Austromactra rufescens (Lamarck, 1818) (‘reddish trough-shell’)

Synonym(s): rufescens Lamarck, 1818 rugifera Dunker, 1862

Typical shell-length 65 mm. Lives subtidally in sand, especially in moderately sheltered environments. Adult shell often greatly thickened; juvenile shell thin and more intensely coloured. Native. Endemic to southern and eastern Australia (NSW, TAS, VIC , SA and WA). In Tasmanian waters, this is a widespread and common species.
