Batillariidae: Batillaria australis (Quoy & Gaimard, 1834) (‘southern mud-creeper’)

Synonym(s): australis Quoy & Gaimard, 1834 alternata Hutton, 1873.

Typical shell-length 45 mm. Lives intertidally amongst seaweed and seagrass, especially in sheltered environments. Native. Endemic to southeastern and southwestern Australia (QLD, NSW, TAS, VIC, SA and WA). In Tasmanian waters, this is a widespread and locally common species.
