Muricidae – Trophoninae: Benthoxystus petterdi (Crosse, 1870) (‘Petterd’s trophon’)

Synonym(s): petterdi Crosse, 1870 clathratus Tenison-Woods, 1876.

Typical shell-length 10 mm. Shell may be white or grey-brown; densely reticulated, except in worn beached specimens. Lives subtidally amongst rocks and seaweed. Native. Endemic to southeastern Australia (NSW, TAS, VIC and SA). In Tasmanian waters, this is a widespread species, but uncommon as a beached shell.
