Veneridae – Venerinae: Chioneryx cardioides (Lamarck, 1818) (‘cockle-like venus’)

Synonym(s): cardioides Lamarck, 1818 striatissima Sowerby, 1853.

Typical shell-length 12 mm. Young shells may bear brown markings. Lives subtidally in sand. Native. Endemic to southeastern and southwestern Australia (NSW, TAS, VIC, SA and WA). In Tasmanian waters, this is a widespread but generally uncommon and readily overlooked species; most common in the SE.
