Chitonidae – Chitoninae: Chiton (Amaurochiton) glaucus Gray, 1828 (‘green chiton’)

Synonym(s): glaucus Gray, 1828.

Typical shell-length 30 mm. A relatively broadly oval chiton, uniformly green. Quite mobile when disturbed, and will readily roll into a ball if dislodged. Lives intertidally under rocks and stones on sheltered shores, emerging onto exposed rock surfaces at night. Non-native. Occurs in southeastern Australia (TAS only); also New Zealand. In Tasmanian waters, this species is now common in SE Tasmania and probably expanding its range northwards and westwards, following unintentional introduction from New Zealand.
