Glycymerididae: Glycymeris (Glycymeris) grayana (Dunker, 1857) (‘Gray’s dog-cockle’)
Synonym(s): grayana Dunker, 1857 flammeus auctt. (non Reeve) australis Quoy & Gaimard, 1834 (non Morton, 1834) kenyoniana Brazier, 1898.
Typical shell-length 50 mm. Shell typically bears sparse, wavy concentric bands of pale-brown streaks or chevrons. Periostracum not usually present. Shell surface appears to almost entirely lack ribs; outline often laterally splayed on one side. Lives subtidally in sand in exposed environments. Native. Endemic to southeastern Australia (NSW, TAS and VIC). In Tasmanian waters, this is an uncommon species, with records largely confined to the NE coast and Flinders Island.
