Histioteuthidae: Histioteuthis meleagroteuthis (Chun, 1910) (‘turkey jewel-squid’)

Synonym(s): meleagroteuthis Chun, 1910 bruuni Voss, 1969 separata Sasaki, 1915.

Typical mantle-length 100 mm. Lives in offshore waters in midwater. Native. Occurs in southeastern Australia (TAS and perhaps other states); also widespread in warmer oceanic waters worldwide. In Tasmanian waters, this species has been recorded as beak(s) recovered from the guts of beached whale(s).
