Mitridae – Isarinae: Isara carbonaria Swainson, 1822 (‘sooty mitre’)
Synonym(s): carbonaria Swainson, 1822 abbreviata G. B. Sowerby II, 1874.
Typical shell-length 70 mm. Lives subtidally amongst rocks and seaweed. Native. Occurs in southeastern Australia (NSW, TAS and VIC); also New Zealand. In Tasmanian waters, this species has been taken live off the SE coast but has yet to be recorded as a beached shell.
