Calyptraeidae: Maoricrypta immersa (Angas, 1865) (‘common slipper-limpet’)

Synonym(s): immersa Angas, 1865.

Typical shell-length 25 mm. Body whorl may be convex or almost flat. Lives subtidally atttached to stones and the shells of living molluscs, the larger female attached to the substrate while the smaller males are attached to the female’s shell. Native. Endemic to southeastern and southwestern Australia (NSW, TAS, VIC, SA and WA). In Tasmanian waters, this is a widespread species but seldom beached; large subfossils of this or a related species sometimes beached in SE Tasmania.
