Marginellidae – Marginellinae: Mesoginella turbinata (G. B. Sowerby II, 1846) (‘top-shaped margin-shell’)

Synonym(s): turbinata Sowerby, 1846 albina Gaskoin, 1853 pygmaea Suter, 1913 leia Cotton, 1944 pattisoni Cotton, 1944 pusilla Laseron, 1948.

Typical shell-length 7.0 mm. The broad outline and the slightly raised ribs on the shoulder of the body-whorl are characteristic. Lives subtidally in sand in moderately sheltered environments. Native. Endemic to southeastern and southwestern Australia (NSW, TAS, VIC, SA and WA). In Tasmanian waters, this is a widespread species, but seldom beached in large numbers; perhaps most common in the SE.
