Fissurellidae – Emarginulinae: Hemitoma (Montfortia) subemarginatum (Blainville, 1819) (‘giant notch-limpet’)

Synonym(s): subemarginata Blainville, 1819 emarginata Blainville, 1825 australis Quoy & Gaimard, 1834.
Typical shell-length 30 mm. Lives subtidally and offshore under rocks and stones, and usually associated with sponges and bryozoans, on which it probably feeds. Native. Endemic to southeastern and southwestern Australia (TAS, VIC, SA and WA). In Tasmanian waters, this is a widespread species but seldom beached in numbers.
