Trigoniidae: Neotrigonia margaritacea (Lamarck, 1804) (‘pearly brooch-shell’)

Synonym(s): margaritacea Lamarck, 1804 bednalli Verco, 1907 antarctica Péron, 1807 horia Cotton, 1953 pectinata Lamarck, 1819.
Typical shell-length 40 mm. Shell thick and heavy. The delicate pink pigment fades but the nacreous, often metallic sheen of the interior surface persists. Lives subtidally and offshore in sand in moderately exposed environments. Native. Endemic to southeastern and southwestern Australia (NSW, TAS, VIC, SA and WA). In Tasmanian waters, this is a widespread species, but not common as a beached shell.
