Cancellariidae – Cancellariinae: Nevia spirata (Lamarck, 1822) (‘excavated nutmeg-shell’)

Synonym(s): spirata Lamarck, 1822 excavata Soerby, 1848.

Typical shell-length 40 mm. Similar in shape to Zemira australis, but that species lacks columellar folds. Beached shells likely to be heavily worn. Lives subtidally in sand, emerging at night to feed. Native. Endemic to southeastern and southwestern Australia (TAS, VIC, SA and WA). In Tasmanian waters, this species is only known from scattered records; most likely to be found in the N.
