Onychoteuthidae: Onychoteuthis banksii (Leach, 1817) (‘Banks’s clubhook-squid’)

Synonym(s): banksii Leach, 1817 fabricii Lichtenstein, 1818, molinae Lichtenstein, 1818 fleuryi Reynaud, 1830 lesueurii d’Orbigny, 1835 bianconii Vérany, 1847 carolii Joubin, 1900.
Typical mantle-length 100 mm. Lives in offshore waters in midwater. Native. Occurs ineastern Australia (QLD, NSW, TAS, VIC and SA); also elsewhere in tropical and temperate seas of both hemispheres. In Tasmanian waters, this species has been recorded as beak(s) recovered from the guts of beached whale(s).
