Hiatellidae: Panopea australis (G. B. Sowerby I, 1833) (‘southern gaper’)

Synonym(s): australis Sowerby, 1833 angusta Hedley, 1915.
Typical shell-length 180 mm. Lives subtidally in sand and mud in moderately sheltered environments. Native. Endemic to southern and eastern Australia (QLD, NSW, TAS, VIC and SA). In Tasmanian waters, this is a widespread but uncommon species.
