Molluscs of Tasmania

Muricidae – Muricinae: Phyllocoma (Galfridus) speciosa (Angas, 1871) (‘pretty murex’)

Synonym(s): speciosa Angas, 1871.

Typical shell-length 20 mm. Beached shells often worn. Lives subtidally amongst rocks and seaweed. Native. Endemic to southeastern Australia (NSW, TAS and VIC). In Tasmanian waters, this is a rare species, probably confined to the NE coast but has been confused with P. eburnea and so its true distribution remains unclear.
