Polyceridae – Polycerinae: Polycera capensis Quoy & Gaimard, 1824 (‘Cape sea-slug’)

Synonym(s): capensis Quoy & Gaimard, 1824 conspicua Allan, 1932.
Typical body-length 60 mm. Lives subtidally on bryozoans, particularly Bugula species, on which it feeds. Non-native. Occurs in southeastern Australia (NSW & TAS); also South Africa. In Tasmanian waters this species was first recorded in 2014, off Maria Island, but may be expected to spread further around the coast where water temperatures are sufficiently high.
