Pyroteuthidae: Pyroteuthis margaritifera (Rüppell, 1844) (‘pearly firefly-squid’)

Synonym(s): margaritifera Rüppell, 1844.
Typical mantle-length 40 mm. Lives in offshore waters. Native. Occurs in eastern and western Australia (QLD, NSW, TAS, SA and WA); also widespread in the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans. In Tasmanian waters, this species occurs well offshore, with available records all from off the west, south and east coasts; has also been recorded as beak(s) recovered from the guts of beached whale(s).
