Ranellidae – Ranellinae: Ranella australasia (Perry, 1811) (‘Australasian rock-whelk’)

Synonym(s): australasia Perry, 1811 gemmifera Euthyme, 1889 vossi Powell, 1952 blacki Powell, 1954.
Typical shell-length 90 mm. Lives subtidally and offshore amongst rocks and seaweed, especially in exposed environments. Native. Occurs in southeastern Australia (NSW, TAS and VIC); also New Zealand, with further subspecies in South Africa. In Tasmanian waters, this is a common species in the E and S, rare elsewhere.
