Umbraculidae: Umbraculum umbraculum (Lightfoot, 1786) (‘common umbrella-shell’)

Synonym(s): umbraculum Lightfoot, 1786 sinicum Gmelin, 1791.
Typical shell-length 100 mm. Lives intertidally and subtidally amongst sponges, on which it feeds. Native. Occurs all around Australia (QLD, NSW, TAS, VIC, SA, WA and NT); also elsewhere in tropical and temperate seas of both hemispheres. In Tasmanian waters there are few records of this species but it may prove to be widespread.
